GitLab data exports: preparation and rights review

Prepare GitLab records for an AI data licensing review: export scope, content risks, provenance, and a bounded pilot.

What the export does and does not establish

GitLab documents project import and export as a migration mechanism. Its project archive is not synonymous with every surrounding asset: registry content and build artifacts may need different handling. Check the documentation for your deployed version and enabled features. Record whether your source is GitLab.com, Dedicated, or a self-managed instance.

Content boundaries to review

A GitLab project can contain proprietary source, open-source components, external merge requests, issue discussions, and CI configuration. Group ownership does not resolve rights to each contribution. Build outputs may embed third-party assets or test data. Security reports and incident discussions should be assessed independently from ordinary development examples because their disclosure can create operational risk.

Prepare a narrow candidate collection

Define a useful unit, such as an issue linked to a merge request and a successful test run. Keep the distinction between source code, review text, and machine-generated pipeline output. Scan history for leaked tokens without copying those tokens into review reports. Do not move CI variables or registry credentials into a candidate data package.

Evidence to preserve

Preserve project and group identity, deployed version, commit references, merge-request links, collection settings, and the archive inventory. Record which artifacts, uploads, and relationships are absent. Capture licensing and contributor evidence at the relevant snapshot, and keep a restricted record of any removed content so future refreshes do not accidentally restore it.

Validate before offering a sample

A first pilot should use one project with a documented ownership chain and reproducible tests. Check whether incomplete pipeline evidence changes the meaning of the examples. If a purported fix cannot be reproduced without private infrastructure, label that limitation. Successful export or migration proves portability of the selected records, not permission to license them to a model developer.

Before any external sample or sale, have the responsible rights and privacy reviewers assess the proposed recipient, training or evaluation purpose, retention, redistribution, and deletion obligations. Preserve the relevant contract versions and written decisions. These preparation steps are a review framework, not a legal conclusion or a statement that the platform endorses commercialization.
