Figma data exports: preparation and rights review

Prepare Figma records for an AI data licensing review: export scope, content risks, provenance, and a bounded pilot.

What the export does and does not establish

Figma supports saving local copies where file permissions allow it. Its help documentation notes that local copies exclude version history and comments. Export access is a technical capability; it does not establish rights to license every image, typeface, icon, component, or client design represented in the file.

Content boundaries to review

Design files commonly combine original layouts, stock photography, licensed fonts, community resources, customer brand assets, and screenshots of other products. Agency possession of an editable file does not necessarily mean the agency can sell it for model training. Review the client agreement and asset licenses separately, especially where a paid asset is embedded in an otherwise original composition.

Prepare a narrow candidate collection

Define whether the dataset consists of rendered screens, editable structure, design annotations, or before-and-after examples. Each representation exposes different material and may require different permissions. Remove real customer data from mockups and inspect hidden layers, off-canvas objects, component variants, and prototype links. Avoid assuming a clean screenshot means the underlying file is safe to distribute.

Evidence to preserve

Preserve original file identity, capture date, frame or node references, asset provenance, and the approval basis for each design. Keep a register of fonts, images, icons, and external libraries, including items excluded from delivery. Record what local-copy limitations mean for authorship or revision evidence; preserve that evidence separately through approved processes when it matters.

Validate before offering a sample

A strong pilot uses deliberately selected, clearly owned screens with reviewed assets and useful annotations. Test whether the exported representation preserves layout and text relationships accurately. If a client design cannot be cleared, exclude it rather than replacing branding and assuming the remaining composition is unrestricted. Describe the approved downstream uses precisely before any buyer receives editable files or renders.

Before any external sample or sale, have the responsible rights and privacy reviewers assess the proposed recipient, training or evaluation purpose, retention, redistribution, and deletion obligations. Preserve the relevant contract versions and written decisions. These preparation steps are a review framework, not a legal conclusion or a statement that the platform endorses commercialization.
